Excellent Psyched for Summer Cycling event with COGGS!

IMG_4009_sm

Last Wednesday we welcomed in the Summer with a rockin' party at Meteek! We celebrated the great projects that COGGS is accomplishing to support cycling in Duluth, and the enjoyment we all experience in Duluth's great outdoors!

The "We Bike Duluth" community photo show was hanging in the gallery, with a vision to expand it's offerings by having folks continue to send in a photo and caption of how they enjoy cycling in Duluth - more on that in a future post.

Thanks to John Morrison for setting up a great obstacle course, with an outstanding pond feature made possible by Eric Nisswandt's flagpoles. Many wet and a few dry runs were accomplished!

James Larson rocked the tunes, great food was shared, plans and feats discussed, and great Thirsty Pagan beer was enjoyed, thanks again to John Morrison. And thanks to Doran Nurmi for sending in some of the photos below!

Replacing Thermopanes – 2014 in Review

Posted by

We install new and replacement windows, and thermopane window glass replacement when called for. With this client, we had a beautiful view of Lake Superior and the St. Louis River, which means a pretty exposed site.

We replaced the 30-year-old thermopanes with the assistance of this nifty yellow pneumatic glass power lifting tool. Some of the panes weighed in at 460 pounds, so we were happy to have the assistance.

While replacing the glass, we rebuilt the wall section details with rainscreen baffles to deter wind-driven moisture from penetrating the wall. More about that in another post...

Shallow Foundation Design Installation – 2014 in Review

Posted by

Shallow foundations are one of our specialties, and this project gave us the opportunity to deploy our shallow foundation design expertise for a cabin in the woods.

A design-build project, the cabin footprint is 24' x 50'. We started with excavating the footprint, then added a layer of foam. We then added a layer of 1 1/2" rock, filter fabric, and another layer of rock

On top of that, we installed the base plate and then a pressure-treated foundation section that we pre-fabbed in our shop. We back-filled with sand, and were then ready to go.

Meteek & Co. is one of the pioneers of modern shallow foundation design in the United States. We built our first shallow foundation project using a Norwegian pamphlet acquired from the National Home Builders Association Research Council in 1990, which we easily had translated in our Nordic-roots permeated community.

Ever wonder what inspired the beautiful shapes of the Sydney Opera House? How the concrete vaults were engineered? Or the publicly owned project was paid for?

On Sunday October 12 Bob Bruce will answer these questions and more in a spirited presentation on the competition, design issues, engineering marvels and political struggles that shaped the process of building the Sydney Opera House.

In 1969 Bob Bruce traveled to Sydney to research the Opera House, then in it's 10th year of construction. Bob's investigation included reading through competition entries at the Sydney Public LIbrary and visiting the construction site, where he made photographs of the vaults showing details not visible in the finished structure.

Bob's photographs will be featured in the Gallery and sprinkled through his presentation, along with Jørn Utzon's architectural sketches, historical site photos, and diagrams explaining the elements of the structure.

The Gallery will open at 5:30, with the presentation running from 6-7 pm, followed by a reception with live DJ Elysium Alps.

Come by and ask questions, discuss architecture and make merry!

Flyer-Family Business Night

Any business has to make decisions and clarify strategy in order to stay successful, but for family businesses, these decisions often double and intertwine. Decisions about what's the best for the business and what's the best for the family often steer family businesses differently than those that are publicly-owned.

Family businesses can be more complex, but they are often able to make different decisions for themselves and the communities they serve than business driven by outside investors.

On Saturday, October 4, Meteek will host Duluth's first Family Business Forum. Inspired by conversations with Dr. Sanjay Goel, a friend and professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship at UMD who specializes in Family Business, the Forum will be a place to find out about information and strategies for family business, for people who work in or with family businesses.

Dr. Goel will present current research, experiences with family businesses worldwide (Sanjay works with family businesses in many countries, including Sweden, Poland, Singapore and Brazil), and resources for those who work in or with family businesses. While cultures, language, and scope of family business differ, there are often startling similarities to what family businesses face in today's economy. We will look and discuss some case studies, with a reception to follow.

See you there!

Super Evening with Design Duluth!

Posted by

Last week we hosted students from the Design Duluth studio at the UMN. This is the third year of the combined Landscape Architecture and Architecture graduate design studio. The studio is part of a larger focus on solutions and future visioning for the complex infrastructures -- physical, economic and social -- in Duluth.

This years' 39 students gathered with community members to meet, exchange information, and to view some of the work from last years' studio in the gallery. It was a great event, and a great opportunity for the students and Duluth!
